Sponsored by Department of International Cooperation and Exchange of the Ministry of Education(DICEME) and undertaken by Beijing Foreign Studies University, the 12th National Russian Contest in Colleges and Universities（NRCCU）was held in Beijing on October 26th, 2019. 359 students from 144 colleges and universities nationwide underwent a fierce competition on 26th and 27th. The contest divided the contestants into three groups, the junior group, the senior group and the graduate group. In the form of prepared speech, oral expression and interpretation, the contest examined the contestants’ comprehensive Russian skill and their understanding of Russian culture, history, traditional customs and other aspects. 60 winners of the first, second, third prizes were selected by the preliminary, semi-final and final. Fully funded by the Secretariat of China Scholarship Council, they will go to Russia for advanced studies or a higher degree.
Zhang Xiao, 2018-grade student of Russian major from School of Foreign Languages and Literatures(SFLL), participated in the junior group’s competition on behalf of Lanzhou University(LZU). After fierce competition, solid professional foundation and stable improvising performance made him stood out from 146 contestants and he finally occupied the 13th place throughout the country and won the third prize. He Jin, teacher of Russian Department of our school, won the title of Excellent Instructor.
The topics of the contest kept in sync with the development of the country and the times, including the 70th anniversary of the PRC, XXIV Olympic Winter Games, the development of 5G technology, China’s cultural export, the construction of ecological civilization, the fire in Notre Dame DE Paris, which test not only the contestants’ ability to comprehensively apply Russian for cross-cultural communication, but also their international vision and innovation consciousness.
Li hai, Deputy Director of DICEME, at the opening ceremony claimed that language is a bridge of communication. Under the background that China-Russia relationship is undergoing high-level development, the two countries urgently need a large number of cooperation-oriented talents who are proficient in both languages. It is necessary and urgent to strengthen Russian teaching in China and Chinese teaching in Russia, which are driven by sufficient internal impetus and external demand. As one of the institutionalized projects within the framework of China-Russia cooperation in cultural education, the contest aims to enhance cultural exchanges between China and Russia, to promote Russian teaching nationwide, as well as to select, train and reserve excellent Russian talents for the country. Since 2008, it has been successfully held for 11 times. LZU Students have made great achievements in the contest, which fully shows our university’s overall level of Russian teaching.
